EDINBURG, TX – The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team opened their two game swing in Texas at UTRGV. The `Runners came into Friday night's game in fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference and UTRGV was in seventh. So this conference matchup was huge for both teams doing their best to get into the WAC tournament.
The two teams played a scoreless first half. `Runners goalkeeper
Detre Bell made two saves and made an incredible save in the 39
th minute to ensure CSUB would go to the half tied. UTRGV had five shots in the first half to CSUB's zero.
Halfway through the second half, Bell made another good save, this one at point blank range to keep the `Runners tied. Bell made his second spectacular save of the second half, this one in the 85
th minute to continue to give the `Runners a chance to steal a victory in Edinburg. At end of regulation, the score was tied at zero. CSUB outshot UTRGV in the second half six to five.
With one second remaining in the first overtime, Bell made a diving save, his fifth of the game and UTRGV and CSUB headed to a second overtime. And after two overtimes, the two teams would play to a 0-0 draw.
The `Runners are now 5-7-1 and 3-2-1 in the WAC, while UTRGV is now 5-5-3 and 2-3-2 in the WAC. Every point is crucial at this point and getting a point on the road is huge for CSUB's Head Coach
Richie Grant's squad.
The `Runners will finish their trip to Texas with a match at UIW on Sunday, Oct. 22 with kickoff at 1 p.m. CT (11 a.m. PT).
