Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Julian Zamora's goal in the 71st minute capped off a second half CSU Bakersfield comeback as the Roadrunners defeated Loyola Marymount 2-1 in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
Maurice Morton put the Lions (4-4) into the lead with a goal off a free kick in the 37th minute. Hugo Vinales scored his third goal of the season at the 56:06 mark. Vinales redirected a Daniel Drier cross past Lions' goalie Colin Partee.
Zamora scored what proved to be the game winner when he deked an LMU defender in a 1-on-1 situation, blasting the ball past Partee in the left part of the LMU goal. Jamie Carey-Morrell was credited an assist on the play. Loyola Marymount pressed and had a chance to tie the match in the final minute. The Lions put the ball towards the CSUB goal and was knocked off a Roadrunner player, resulting in a corner kick with 34 seconds to go.
As Adrian Perez set up a LMU corner kick, the Lions put their remaining 10 field players inside the 18 including Partee. Perez's kick resulted in a Garrett Amador shot attempt which went wide, allowing the 'Runners to break a five-game losing streak. LMU outshot the Roadrunners 23-11, but only 7-4 on goal. CSUB goalie Nicolas Clever made six saves.
"It was a great response from the whole team in the second half," said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. Moving Jamie (Carey-Morrell) to the middle of the field allowed us to get control of the game. We got quality finishes from both Julian and Hugo."
CSU Bakersfield (2-5) returns home next Sunday night when CSUB hosts CSUN at 7 p.m.
