Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—James Wypch scored with 1:59 remaining in the first overtime to give Drake a 1-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield in men's soccer action Sunday night.
The Bulldogs scored the game winner when Antonio Sanchez sent a crossing pass into the box towards Wypych who headed the ball in from in front of the CSUB goal. Drake played the final 34+ minutes of the match a man down after Andre Heine was ejected after receiving his second yellow card of the match at the 65:05 mark of the second half.
The teams went to overtime after each recording seven shots during regulation. CSUB posted the first two shots of the extra frame including a Julian Zamora attempt that just went wide of Darrin MacLeod in the Drake net. The Roadrunners outshot the Bulldogs 9-8 as Drake (who made it to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament) held the corner kick advantage 6-4. Zamora took a game high four shots. Louis Lapouge posted two shots for the 'Runners as CSUB goalie Nicolas Clever made two saves.
“I thought we played well enough to win the game,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “We created enough chances especially when they went down a man. It was a super cross and it shouldn't have gotten there, but it was the way it went for us. I think we learned an important lesson tonight.”
CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field Thursday night when the 'Runners host San Francisco at 7 p.m.
