Box Score EDINBURG, Texas---UT Rio Grande Valley starting pitcher Ryan Jackson retired 19 CSU Bakersfield batters in a row at one point as the Vaqueros defeated the Roadrunners 5-0 Friday night.
Jackson gave up two CSUB hits before setting down the Roadrunners in order from the third to the eighth inning. After getting the first out of the ninth, Nick Vehlewald singled to right to break the 'Runner draught. He would end the game on second after Jackson got the final two outs for the complete game three-hitter. Jackson struck out three and did not walk a batter.
The game was scoreless through three before the Vaqueros' Joseph Collazo worked out a four-pitch walk against CSUB starter Isaiah Moten. Cole Loncar's single up the middle went off of Moten's leg as the Roadrunner righty tried to block the ball. UTRGV Clean-up hitter Scott Mercer laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance both base runners. Jacob Huckabay singled to left to plate Collazo.
With runners on the corners, Victor Garcia, Jr. put down a safety squeeze and ended up being credited with a sacrifice as Loncar scored. Austin Oakes was hit by a Moten pitch. Correy Davis grounded to Ryan Grotjohn at short for the final out of the inning.
Anthony Gomez opened the UTRGV fifth with a walk before Moten got retired the next two Vaqueros. Loncar singled to left to push Gomez to second. Mercer walked to load the bases before Huckabay singled to right center on a 2-1 count to drive in two runs. Garcia, Jr. struck out to conclude the frame.
Oakes led off the sixth with a single up the middle and moved to second on a Moten wild pitch. Davis walked to bring up Gomez. Gomez attempted to bunt, but he popped it up to Max Carter at first. Carter caught the ball and threw down to Grotjohn at second for the third CSUB double play of the night. Moten struck out Jose Garcia to get out of the inning.
Garcia, Jr. singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth off of CSUB reliever Adam Coats. Coats struck out Coates before giving up a single to Davis. Gomez walked to load the bases. Jose Garcia walked to force in the fifth UTRGV run. Collazo would be retired to conclude the inning.
Moten only gave up six hits in six innings, but he walked six batters, before Coats entered the game in the seventh. Huckabay would record two of the eight UTRGV hits and drove in a total of three runs.
CSUB (9-34, 4-14 WAC) continues the series at UTRGV (19-22, 8-8 WAC) Saturday at 6 p.m. (CDT). The Roadrunners return home May 13 against Chicago State which will begin a seven game home stand that concludes the regular season.
