BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—A school record offensive exhibition powered CSU Bakersfield to a 16-2 victory over North Dakota in the final regular season baseball game for the Roadrunners Saturday afternoon.
Trailing the Fighting Hawks 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth. The Roadrunners exploded for a school record 10 runs in the inning. CSUB sent 16 batters to the plate during the 27-minute span. The old record for most runs in an inning by a CSUB team was eight which was recorded six times, most recently against San Jose State on May 18, 2013.
CSU Bakersfield scored four more times in the fifth before UND was able to record an out. CSUB would bat around again, sending 11 batters to the plate, plating a total of six runs. North Dakota added one run in the top of the seventh.
Mahlik Jones, David Metzgar, and Chance Gusbeth each recorded three hits. Metzgar recorded three RBI's. Jake Ortega, Jones and Gusbeth each drove in two runs. Metzgar and Max Carter both scored three runs. Five CSUB pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
Earlier this Spring, North Dakota announced this would be the final year for varsity baseball at the school due to budget issues. The Fighting Hawks conclude the 2016 season with an 8-37 overall record, 4-23 in the WAC.
The Roadrunners (18-35, 12-14 WAC) open WAC Tournament play Wednesday in Mesa, Ariz. CSUB takes on the third seed, Utah Valley (33-21, 18-9 WAC) at 7 p.m.
