UVU Overcomes Strong CSUB Start To Win 11-5

Box Score

OREM, Utah—Utah Valley overcame a strong CSU Bakersfield start to defeat the Roadrunners 11-5 Saturday night.

The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ryan Grotjohn singled in Christian Deaton. CSUB loaded the bases later in the inning and capitalized on a daring steal of home by Dustin Frailey that made it 2-0. Nick Vehlewald's single later in the frame would drive in two runs as the 'Runners would bat around.

The top of the first featured a total of six Roadrunner stolen bases, a new CSUB school record. The old mark of five was set against NM State Mar. 15, 2015. It is the ninth time that a Division I team has stolen six bases in an inning. The NCAA Division I record for most stolen bases in an inning is eight which is held by FIU (first inning vs Alabama A&M, 2/6/93) and Alabama State (seventh, vs Tuskegee, 3/27/91).

Utah Valley responded in the bottom of the first. With one out, Zac Willis walked. Wills advanced to second on a Greyson Bogden single. Mark Krueger singled in Wills before Craig Brinkerhof plated Bogden with a single to right. A Chance Gusbeth throwing error allowed Krueger to score and move Winkerhoff all the way to third. A Spencer Gothberg sacrifice fly scored Krueger to tie the game. CSUB finally got out of the inning when Stone Ramsey grounded out to second.

The Wolverines took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. After CSUB starter Andrew Hansen walked Krueger with one out, Brinkerhoff singled. Gothberg doubled to right center to score Krueger. Ramsey reached on an infield single that allowed Brinkerhoff to score. Jason Erlandson's infield single to short drove in Gothberg. Both Erlandson and Ramsey advanced a base after a Mahlik Jones committed a throwing error on Erlandson's ball. A Jordan Schlehuber sac fly drove in Ramsey for UVU's eighth run which was unearned.

Grotjohn drove in in his second run of the night with a two-out single in the top of the fifth. Willis opened the UVU seventh by tripling off of CSUB reliever Adam Coats. Bogden's sac fly would score Williams for the Wolverines' ninth run. Trevor Roll's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth extended the lead to five for Utah Valley. Bogden added an RBI later in the inning.

After the rough first inning, the two Utah Valley pitchers; Danny Beddes, Logan Belz limited the Roadrunners to six hits. Brinkerhof, Bogden, Krueger each tallied two hits for the Wolverines. Grotjohn was 2-for-4 for CSUB.

CSUB (9-32, 4-12 WAC) and Utah Valley (22-19, 8-8 WAC) conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m. (MDT). The Roadrunners return home May 13 against Chicago State which will begin a seven game home stand that concludes the regular season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available through e CSUB Ticket Office at (661) 654-BLUE or tickets@csub.edu, or online at Vallitix.com.
