Grand Canyon Outlasts CSUB 9-6

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Grand Canyon outlasted CSU Bakersfield 9-6 to complete a three-game Western Athletic Conference baseball sweep Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field.

Zach Malis' two-RBI double in the top of the first keyed a 3-0 start for the Antelopes. The Roadrunners got on the board in the bottom of the first when Dustin Frailey hit his second home run of the season. The 'Lopes added a run in the top of the second before the 'Runners took advantage of a GCU error to score three unearned runs to tie the score.

A second Malis two-RBI double in the third highlighted a second three run Grand Canyon rally. The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with two outs, but Antelope starter Vorhof struck out Cody White for the third out.

Ryan Grotjohn recorded an RBI in the fourth for the 'Runners before GCU scored once in the fifth and again in the sixth. The Roadrunners threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases again with two outs. Tyler Wyatt, the third GCU pitcher of the game, induced Drew Seelman ground out to third to keep CSUB from scoring.

The Roadrunners pushed across a run in the eighth when David Metzgar doubled in Grotjohn. CSUB threatened again the ninth. With Grand Canyon closer AJ Franks on, Seelman walked to begin the inning. He advanced to second on a Mahlik Jones single. Pinch hitter Nick Vehlewald flied out to center before a second 'Runner pinch hitter, Joey Sanchez, grounded out to short which allowed both runners to move up a base. Kyle Adkins would ground out to Franks to end the game.

CSUB outhit Grand Canyon (15-12, 4-2 WAC) 10-8. Jones was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Frailey was 2-for-4 with two run scored. Seelman went 2-for-4. In addition to his four RBI's, Malis would put up two hits. Thomas Lerouge also had two hits.

CSUB (5-22, 0-6WAC) looks to break a 12-game losing streak Friday when the 'Runners host Sacramento State to open a three game WAC series at 6 p.m. Tickets are available through the CSUB Ticket Office at (661) 654-BLUE or tickets@csub.edu, or online at Vallitix.com.
