No. 28 Cal State Fullerton Defeats CSUB 8-3

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—After a promising CSU Bakersfield start, six Cal State Fullerton pitchers would combine on a five-hitter as the Titans defeated the Roadrunners 8-3 Tuesday night.

On the second pitch of the bottom of the first, CSUB's Dustin Frailey extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an opposite field home run to right field. The Roadrunners took advantage of a two-out Titans' error in the bottom of the second to score a run and take a 2-0 lead.

The Titans put at least one runner on in each of the first three innings, but CSUB starter AJ Monarrez pitched out of the threats. In a controlled start, Monarrez gave way to Max Carter in the fourth.

Carter worked a scoreless fourth before walking Mark LaForte to begin the fifth. On a hit-and-run call, Josh Vargas singled through the left side to advance LaForte to second. Tanner Pinkston tied the score with a double down the right field line. Dalton Blaser grounded out to second which pushed Pinkston to third. With the 'Runner infield in, Timmy Richards' line a shot deep enough to right that scored Pinkston for the first Cal State Fullerton lead.

Scott Hurst walked with two outs before Jerrod Bravo singled up the middle to bring up Jake Pavletich. Pavletich, a Bakersfield native, singled through the right side to plate Hurst. Carter struck out Niko Pacheco to wrap up the inning. The Titans added one in the sixth on a Blaser RBI single before Bravo drove in a run in the seventh. Cal State Fullerton capped off the scoring with two in the ninth.

Colton Eastman started for Fullerton before Brett Conine came on to begin the fourth.  Conine pitched two innings. Maxwell Gibbs tossed the sixth before Gavin Velasquez pitched the seventh. Those four retired 16 in a row, a span that began in the second inning. Scott Serigstad entered the game in the eighth and extended the streak to 19 with a 1-2-3 eighth. Blake Workman relieved Serigstad to get the ninth underway. Workman got the first out to make it 20 in a row before David Metzgar singled to left.

Workman walked Carter to give CSUB runners on the corners. Cody White singled to right to drive in Metzgar who advanced to third on a pair of Workman wild pitches.

Pinkston was 3-for-5 with three RBI's for the Titans. Vargas, Bravo, and Pacheco each posted two hits. In going 1-for-4, Frailey has now reached base in 14 consecutive games. Mahlik Jones extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first.

CSUB (7-27) continues the home stand Wednesday night when the 'Runners host Loyola Marymount (17-17). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available through the CSUB Ticket Office at (661) 654-BLUE or tickets@csub.edu, or online at Vallitix.com.
