UC Irvine Defeats Roadrunners 9-6

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif.—UC Irvine outslugged CSU Bakersfield 9-6 Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark.

The Anteaters (9-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one as Keston Hiura recorded an RBI with one out while UCI successfully stole home for the other.  UC Irvine added to the lead with a Mitch Holland infield single that plated a run in the bottom of the third.

Anteater starter Alonzo Garcia retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before giving up a one-out double to David Metzgar in the top of the fourth. Sergio Robles drove in Metzgar later in the inning with a two-out single to get the 'Runners on the board.

John Sparling relieved Garcia to start the CSUB fifth. He gave up three consecutive singles with two outs which led to RBI's from Frailey and Metzgar and a tie game. Mitchell Miller relieved Sparling and got Max Carter down 1-2 in the count before Carter singled in Christian Deaton for a CSUB lead.  Metzgar added to the lead when his delay steal of home was successful. Robles made it five consecutive two-out hits as his single drove in Carter for a 6-3 advantage.

The Anteaters loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, chasing CSUB starter Chance Gusbeth. Carter moved from first to the mound to face Evan Cassolato. Cassolato doubled to left to plate two. Grant Palmer returned the lead to the Anteaters with a triple that drove in a pair of runs. With the CSUB infield in, pinch-hitter Wyatt Castro grounded out to second, keeping Palmer at third. A Roadrunner passed ball allowed Palmer to score. John Brontsema tripled and came home on an Adam Alcantara triple for what proved to be the final run of the inning.

Hiura went 3-for-5 for UCI while Holland went 2-for-3. Brontsema was also 2-for-3. Frailey, Metzgar, Robles, and Carter all posted two hits for the Roadrunners. Gusbeth threw a career high 5.1 innings, striking out three.

“We had a good performance from Chance tonight, but it wasn't enough to hold off UCI,” said CSUB head coach Bob Macaluso.

CSUB (4-8) will look to break the six-game losing streak Friday night when the Roadrunners host UC Riverside in the opener of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available through the CSUB Ticket Office at (661) 654-BLUE or tickets@csub.edu, or online at Vallitix.com.
