FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – CSU Bakersfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams were well represented at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships on Monday as Carlee Burks and Brayden Greenwald each scored well in a meet featuring the region's top divers.
In the first event of the meet, Burks placed 26th in a massive group of 58 divers. The junior's 1-meter score of 249.50 points was not her best of the season, but helped Burks improve her placing from the 2015 Zones by 21 places.
“I am super proud of Carlee,” said Ben Herboth, CSUB's Diving Coach. “She was ten points away from making finals, which is Top 18, and she was just tremendous. She had some really spectacular dives, but, unfortunately, missed her reverse 2.5, which ultimately cost her in the final standings.”
Herboth also added that he was impressed by the amount of development the native of Bakersfield has made in the last year: “For her to come into this meet and finish 21 places higher than she did last year is a testament to all of her hard work and improvement.”
Greenwald tackled the 3-meter board on Monday and finished 24th of 25 men with a six-dive score of 261.20. The sophomore from Henderson, Nev. impressed his coach in his first-ever Zone meet: “I am very happy with Brayden's finish on the 3-meter board this evening. He's learning how to compete at meets like this and I'm pleased with his progress.”
With the 3-meter board complete, Greenwald will tackle the 1-meter on Tuesday and his coach has full faith in the sophomore's abilities: “I'm optimistic he will carry his momentum into the 1-meter springboard event tomorrow.”
While Greenwald moves down to the 1-meter, Burks will climb the ladder to the 3-meter on Tuesday. The women will again go first, starting at 11 a.m., while the men will compete in the afternoon in Arizona. Live stats for both boards will again be available via DiveMeets.com and a full recap will be posted on GoRunners.com after both Burks and Greenwald finish Tuesday night.
