Roadrunners Fall 8-4 At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly defeated CSU Bakersfield 8-4 Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium.

After stranding runners in scoring position in the top of the second, CSUB got on the board in the top of the fourth when Sergio Robles singled in David Metzgar. Robles came around to score later in the inning when Ryan Grotjohn plated him with a single with one out. Cal Poly got out of the inning when Mustangs' catcher Nick Meyer picked Cody White off at third before Cal Poly reliever Spencer Howard got Nick Vehlewald to fly out to center.

The Mustangs got one back in the bottom of the fourth. CSUB starter Max Carter hit Brett Barbier with one out. After John Schuknecht flew out, Barbier moved to second on a Carter wild pitch and scored on a Michael Sanderson singled down the left field line.

Cooper Moore singled on an 0-2 count to begin the Cal Poly fifth. Meyer laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance Moore to second. Dylan Doherty walked. Alex McKenna singled to load the bases. Kyle Marinconz tied the game with a sacrifice fly that allowed Moore to come home. Barbier put the Mustangs into the lead with a with an opposite field single to right as Doherty scored.  Mahlik Jones relieved Carter. His first batter was Schuknecht who popped out to third on Jones' first pitch to conclude matters.

With one out in the Cal Poly sixth, the Mustangs received back-to-back singles from Josh George and Moore. CSUB played the infield in against Meyer who singled back up the middle for an RBI single. Doherty lined a shot off Jones' glove which he fielded and threw to first for the out as Moore scored. McKenna flew out to right to wrap up the inning.

Nick Vehlewald led off the CSUB seventh with an infield single. He moved to second with one out when Howard walked Dustin Frailey. Christian Deaton grounded out to second which advanced both runners a base. Metzgar, the potential tying run, was struck out by Howard to quiet the CSUB threat.  

The first five Mustangs reach base in the bottom of the seventh as Cal Poly scored three runs to increase the lead to six.  Chance Gusbeth reached on an error to lead off the CSUB eighth. Robles singled left before the third Cal Poly pitcher of the game, Austin Dondanville walked White for the fourth time. Grotjohn grounded out to second for his RBI of the game. Vehlewald reached on an error as Robles scored. Justin Calomeni relieved Dondanville, striking out pinch hitter Andrew Hansen and Frailey to get the Mustangs out of the inning.

Cal Poly (16-7) was paced by Schuknecht who was 3-for-4 with two RBI's. The Mustangs had three other players; Moore, George, and Marinconz each post two hits. White walked a total of four times, tying Kevin Younger for the school record most walks in a game. Younger established the school mark against Sacramento State on May 23, 2013. Grotjohn, Deaton, and Robles each tallied two hits.

The Roadrunners (5-19, 0-3 WAC) look to break a nine-game losing streak Friday night when the Roadrunners return home to begin a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Grand Canyon (10-9, 1-2 WAC).
