Box Score BELLEVUE, Wash.—Max Modeste hit a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Seattle U a 6-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield Saturday afternoon.
A Jake Ortega RBI in the top of the second gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead. Chance Gusbeth, making his first start on the mound in league play for CSUB pitched out of trouble in the second and third, but Seattle U got on the board in the fourth. The first two batters of the inning reached on singles before Gusbeth struck out Brock Carpenter.
Lucas Denney tied the score with an RBI single to right. Griffin Andreychuk advance to third on the play. Andreychuck scored on a wild pitch to give the Redhawks the lead for the first time. Denney moved to second on the play. Gusbeth settled in, getting Jeffrey Morgan to pop out to second before Modeset popped out to first for the final out.
Cody White tied the game for the Roadrunners with a two-out double in the top of the fifth that plated Drew Seelman. Dustin Frailey and White posted back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the seventh but David Metzgar's shot to left was caught at the warning track for the third out.
Sergio Robles doubled with one out in the eighth. With two outs, pinch hitter Christian Deaton went down in the count 1-2 to SU reliever Connor Moore before hitting a single to right that allowed Robles to score the go-ahead run. Seattle U (14-9, 3-0 WAC) closer Austin Hansen came on to start the ninth. He hit Frailey with a pitch. Frailey moved to second on a White sacrifice bunt. Metzgar grounded out to second which allowed Frailey to advance to third. Max Carter walked to put baserunners on at the corners. Robles couldn't drive in an insurance run as he flew out to conclude the frame.
Gusbeth retired 15 in a row before Andreychuck recorded his third hit of the day, a single up the middle with one out in the ninth. Carpenter singled to left to put the tying run at second. Denney walked to load the bases. Curtis Perrin pinch hit for Morgan. His sac fly to center scored Andreychuck to tie the score, setting the stage for Modeste's game winning home run.
White, Robles, and Seelman each posted two hits for CSUB. The Roadrunners (5-18, 0-3 WAC) travel to Cal Poly (15-7) for a Tuesday 6 p.m. game in San Luis Obispo.
