'Runners Drop 70-64 Battle at Grand Canyon.

Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz.- A pair of late three-pointers giving the Roadrunners life wasn't enough to erase a tough night from beyond-the-arc as CSUB combined for just 4-of-14 from three-point range, while Grand Canyon (19-2, 6-0 WAC) managed to make shots when it mattered, falling 70-64 Thursday night at GCU Arena.

It was the second-straight loss for Bakersfield (14-7, 4-2 WAC) who coming off last week's 68-67 loss to NM State, have fallen to the top-two teams in the WAC by a combined seven points over the last two games.

“I'm proud of the way our team came out tonight and battled, especially coming off that emotional loss last week,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “They came out, they handled this big crowd and we did a lot of things well, we just didn't make some shots when we needed them…I can't wait to play these guys again, it'll be a different story at our place.”

The Roadrunners were 25-of-62 from the field, good for 40 percent, but went on stretches without scoring or where they would struggle from the field allowing GCU to extend their lead.

CSUB made one final push, hitting two late three-pointers and pulling within four points with less than a minute to play. CSUB however was whistled for a pair of charging calls late, forcing them to foul the 'Lopes who closed the game out on the free throw line.

Trailing by 14 in the first half, CSUB used a 9-2 run to close out the period and trail by just seven at the break. The Roadrunners then cut the lead to four points midway through the second half as well but went on a stretch where they went 2-of-10 from the field allowing GCU to stretch the lead back to double-figures.

At one point in the second half, with the Antelopes leading 50-45, both teams went scoreless for nearly four minutes. The 'Runners would finally break the drought with 8:37 remaining following a Jaylin Airington dunk but that was as close as they would get.

Defensively Bakersfield held the 'Lopes to 70 points, their third-lowest point total of the season while allowing them just 8-of-24 from the field in the second half (33%) and just 2-of-7 in that frame from three-point range (29%).  Grand Canyon leads the WAC averaging 81 points-per-game. CSUB however was whistled for 29 fouls in the game, putting key players in early foul trouble and setting the table for GCU to attempt 32 free throws in the game. The 'Lopes converted on 20-of-32 while Bakersfield was 10-of-15 from the line.

“We had some early fouls that we shouldn't have committed that really hurt us tonight, otherwise we did some really good things on defense, we just missed too many shots when it counted,” Barnes said.

The 'Runners were led by Kevin Mays' 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Aly Ahmed scored 12 points on 5-of-9 from the field while Airington added 12 points on 6-of-13 from the field. CSUB turned the ball over 16 times in the loss. Grand Canyon was led by Grandy Glaze's 23 24 points and 13 rebounds, he was 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Leading scorer Joshua Braun added 14 for the 'Lopes.

The Roadrunners will now head to Utah Valley (9-12, 3-3 WAC) who had their brief two-game conference winning streak snapped on Thursday night 73-62 by Seattle. That game will tip off at 6 P.M. (PT) with radio coverage beginning at 5:30 P.M. on Newstalk 1180 and 96.1 FM KERN.
