BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team split a pair of duals Friday at the SDSU Triangular.
The Roadrunners defeated SIU Edwardsville 33-6 in the opener. The dual began at 125 pounds where Sergio Mendez pinned Joe Antonelli in just 25 seconds. Carlos Herrera defeated Dakota Leach 4-2 at 133. Ian Nickell shutout John Muldoon and won by technical fall (15-0) at 141 pounds.
Coleman Hammond used a riding time advantage to post a 9-8 victory at 149 pounds against John Fahy. AJ Fierro defeated Eric Travers by a 6-4 count at 157. Adam Fierro defeated Nate Higgins 5-2 in the 165-pound match. Bryan Battisto charted the victory for CSUB at 174 when he won 8-2 over Clayton Bass.
Derek Nagel recorded the lone SIUE team points when he pinned Dylan Bollinger at the 2:05 mark of the 184-pound bout. Reuben Franklin tallied his eighth major decision of the year when defeated Jake Tindle 10-2 at 197 pounds. Matt Williams wrapped up the dual with a 3-1 victory for the Roadrunners at heavyweight.
In the nightcap, South Dakota State broke CSUB's five-dual winning streak when the Jackrabbits defeated the Roadrunners 23-10.
The dual again began at 125 pounds where Mendez fell 13-9 to Ben Gillette to open the meet. No. 17 Brance Simms handed Herrera a 3-1 loss to put the Jackrabbits up 6-0 in the dual. Seth Gross defeated Nickell by a 4-2 count to increase the South Dakota State to nine.
Alex Kocer won 8-2 against Hammond at 149 pounds to make it 12-0. No. 6 Cody Pack continued the winning streak for the Jacks at 157 when he defeated AJ Fierro 6-0. Adam Fierro got the 'Runners on the board with an 8-3 victory at 165 pounds. South Dakota State put the dual out of reach when David Kocer (174) and Brady Ayers (184) won their respective matches.
The 197-pound bout pitted Franklin, who is ranked as high as eighth in the national polls against Nate Rotert who is ranked as high as ninth in the polls. Franklin improved to 25-5 on the year with a 14-2 major decision. The redshirt senior has won six in a row and 10 of his last 11 matches. 18 of his victories this season have come via major decision, technical fall, or by pin.
In the final match of the night, Williams posted his third consecutive victory as he shutout Alex Macki 4-0 to make it the final 23-10.
CSUB (8-3) returns home Jan. 31 when the Roadrunners host Grand Canyon (5-14) at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
