BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Normally when CSU Bakersfield competes against Utah Valley it is a Western Athletic Conference matchup in many sports. However, Saturday's wrestling dual pitted the Pac-12 Roadrunners against the Big 12 Wolverines. CSUB came away with a 27-19 dual victory Saturday night in the Icardo Center.

The dual began at 174 pounds where CSUB's Adam Fierro moved up a weight to take on the Wolverines' Ross Taylor. Taylor defeated Fierro by major decision 13-5. Will Summer defeated Dylan Bollinger 5-2 to give Utah Valley a 7-0 lead.

No. 9 Reuben Franklin broke the seal for the Roadrunners when he stuck Artyon Almberg at the 2:34 mark of their 197-pound bout. Matt Williams followed at heavyweight when he pinned Jordan Karst with 41 seconds remaining in the match.

No. 18 Chasen Tolbert earned an 11-6 decision over Sergio Mendez at 125 before teammate Jade Rauser pinned Carlos Herrera 1:16 into the 133-pound bout. Ian Nickell picked up a late takedown to record a 9-1 major decision over Jarod Maynes at 141. Coleman Hammond posted a technical fall at 149 when he defeated Matthew Ontiveros by a 17-1 count.

Raider Lofthouse defeated AJ Fierro 9-5 in the 157-pound match before the dual concluded with a UVU forfeit to CSUB's Bryan Battisto at 165 pounds.

“The pins made a big difference in this dual,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “We knew we had the forfeit at 165, so we were able to move Adam Fierro up a weight. He started off strong, but it would be toll on him. The weight advantage came into play in the third period. We were glad that we came out with a good victory.

CSUB travels to South Dakota State next Friday for a pair of duals in Brookings. The doubleheader begins with a 3 p.m. (CST) start against SIU Edwardsville before a 7 p.m. (CST) matchup against the host Jackrabbits. The Roadrunners return to the Icardo Center Jan. 31when CSUB hosts Grand Canyon at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com
