BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- After a two-game weekend at home, the CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team is set to begin the first leg of a two-week road trip. The first stop for the Roadrunners will feature a bit of paradise as CSUB will head to Honolulu, Hawai'i. The 'Runners will have a single match this week when they face off against the University of Hawai'i Saturday, Sept. 12.
“We are really excited about the game this weekend as it is a fantastic opportunity for our program,” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the 'Runners. “We have created a lot of chances in recent games and our team is playing some great soccer. Goals will always win games, and if we can maintain our intensity level as well as the belief in our system, the results will come. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do on Saturday night in Hawai'i.”
The Rainbow Wahine will welcome the Roadrunners to Honolulu with a 1-3-1 record after dropping a pair of road matches last week. The two programs have played three times in the past with CSUB holding a narrow 2-1-0 lead in those matches. The 'Runners won the last matchup 3-1 in Bakersfield, but Saturday's match will be the first meeting for the two teams in Hawai'i as well as the first game since 2010.
In its first six matches of the season, Hawai'i has scored a total of five goals, each coming from a different goal scorer. In goal for the Rainbow Wahine will be junior Monk Berger who has played every minute so far this season. The keeper has allowed 12 goals on the year while recording 27 saves and one shut out (Aug. 31 vs. Denver).
CSUB is also coming off a pair of tough losses last week, but will look to rebound with a strong performance in Honolulu. Sophomore Maja Green continues to lead the way on offense and will reset her career high for goals in a season if she can get her fourth goal on Saturday. Redshirt senior Tori Ornela continues to tend goal well for the 'Runners as she carries on with her march up the CSUB record book.
The 'Runners will kick off against Hawai'i at 7 p.m. (HST) Saturday night. A link to live stats for the match can be found on the CSUB women's soccer schedule page.
