BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Former CSUB All-American women's basketball player Tyonna Outland has signed a contract with Ciudad de la Adelantados of Spain's LF-2 league to continue her professional basketball career.
Outland reported to Ciudad de la Adelantados on Aug. 30. The team is located in San Cristobal, Spain. The LF-2 league season is scheduled to begin Oct. 5.
Outland began her professional career earlier this Summer when she spent training camp with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Outland was the first Roadrunner to sign a WNBA contract after agreeing to terms as an undrafted free agent.
Her career at CSU Bakersfield already includes several record-marks, including all-time leading scorer which she surpassed this past season.
“”I'm just blessed to be able to get this opportunity that few get to experience,” Outland said. “I'm going to do my best to seize the moment by continuing to pray and work hard, my journey doesn't stop here.”
Outland's journey has been nothing short of an inspiring tale. Starting with her humble upbringing in Compton, Calif., her financial struggles which included at one point homelessness; the redshirt senior guard is already leaving CSUB with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, and made the most academically of her injury season three years ago and is currently working on her master's in public administration.
She recently had her high school jersey retired at Lynwood High School.
Outland's on-court success included three postseason appearances during her CSUB career, including the WNIT each of the last two seasons and one a berth in the WBI finals following her freshman campaign. Outland was just getting started then, fast forward five years later and she's twice been named a WBCA All-American and this season surpassed the scoring record and scored over 2,000 for her career, a feat accomplished by just 338 other women's basketball players in the history of NCAA Division I action.
“This is another historical moment for CSUB women's basketball,” said head coach Greg McCall. “This speaks volumes about hard work and dedication paying off, Ty definitely deserves everything she has received.”
The signing of Outland to two different professional contracts, adds professional player development to the list of accolades at the Division I level.
“This puts our program at another level when it comes to recruiting and developing players,” McCall said.
