Barragan Ties Strikeout Record; CSUB Wins 12-1

Box Score

GRAND FORKS, N.D.—James Barragan (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) tied the CSU Bakersfield school record for most strikeouts in a game with 13 as the Roadrunners defeated the University of North Dakota 12-1 Friday afternoon.

Mike McCarthy originally set the school record on Apr. 13, 2010 against Fresno State. Barragan tied the mark when he struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth, getting Hunter Walsh looking to end the game. Barragan allowed a ninth inning home run to current WAC Hitter of the Week Jeff Campbell for UND's only run. Barragan tallied his second consecutive complete game victory, allowing five hits and walking three. After tossing 152 pitches against Utah Valley last Saturday, Barragan threw 130 against UND, 83 for strikes.

“We got a dominating performance from James today,” said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen. “We played the other parts of the game as well as we have all year. Our job now is to keep it going from day to day.”

CSUB scored twice in the third and once in the fourth before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth. The Roadrunners added four more in the top of the ninth.

Max Carter (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) went 3-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored to pace the Roadrunners.  Jordie Hein (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) was 2-for-3 with an RBI while David Metzgar (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) added two hits (2-for-6) and a RBI.

Daniel Lockhert picked up his second hit of the game with one out in the ninth to become the only North Dakota hitter with multiple hits.

The Roadrunners earned its third consecutive victory on Friday, outscoring their opponents 34-2 during the span. CSUB (16-14-1, 4-3-1 WAC) and North Dakota (8-15, 3-5 WAC) conclude the series on Saturday with an 11 a.m. (CDT) start.  The Roadrunners return home Apr. 10 to open a three-game set against Texas-Pan American. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
