Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Joey Sanchez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS) saw one pitch in each of his first two at-bats against Cal State Fullerton. The CSU Bakersfield third baseman made them count as he recorded a pair of singles that drove in three runs as the Roadrunners defeated the Titans 14-1 for CSUB's 10th victory in its last 11 games Wednesday night.
“We are playing well over the last three weeks and have a lot of confidence, but I think we are still going to get better and better,” said CSU Bakersfield head coach Bill Kernen.
RBI's from Sanchez and Ross Hough (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) in the bottom of the second gave the 'Runners an early lead. CSUB took advantage of two Cal State Fullerton errors in the bottom of the third to score four runs. The fifth Cal State Fullerton error allowed three CSUB errors to score in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Stieb's infield single in the top of the sixth plated Timmy Richards.
A sixth Cal State Fullerton error combined with doubles from Sanchez and Williams led to three more unearned CSUB runs in the sixth. Sanchez was hit by a pitch on a 0-1 count during his third plate appearance. His double came on the fifth pitch of his fourth plate appearance and he would end the night 3-for-3 with five RBI's, marking the 11th time that a CSUB player has recorded at least five RBI's in a game. Chance Gusbeth (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) holds the school mark with seven which he posted against Northern Colorado on May 3, 2014. The Roadrunners scored two more unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. Cal State Fullerton would commit a total of seven errors which led 10 unearned runs.
Mylz Jones (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Carter was 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Soloman Williams (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) was also 2-for-4. The 6-7 first basemen scored twice. David Metzgar (So., Lancaster, Calif.,Paraclete HS) charted two hits and a RBI. CSUB posted 18 hits, the fourth most in a game by Roadrunner team. CSUB previously had 18 hits against UC Santa Barbara on May 25, 2012.
“A championship caliber team wins games in many different ways,” Kernen said. “We won 1-0 last Friday and 14-1 tonight. It's not the same two or three guys every night, it's up and down the lineup. We are playing well every day. ”
The Titans (20-19) threatened several times, leaving two runners on in the first, third, and fifth innings. Cal State Fullerton stranded a total of nine in the game. Josh Vargas led the Titans as he was 3-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt.
The Roadrunners (23-15-1, 10-4-1 WAC) avenged an 11-0 loss to the Titans earlier this season. CSUB hosts WAC leader Seattle U (21-19, 12-3 WAC) in a three-game series that gets under way Friday night at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com. If you can't make it to Hardt Field, you can watch the game on Bakersfield.com.
“We have the first place team coming in here this weekend,” Kernen said. “We are a game behind them and it gives us a chance to do something to help ourselves. We will tee it up and see what happens.”
