Box Score IRVINE, Calif.—UC Irvine outslugged CSU Bakersfield 12-6 in game two of their baseball series Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.
Jerry McClanahan hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second for the game's first runs. Cameron Bishop and Mitchell Hollands each posted RBI's with two outs in the bottom of the third for the Anteaters.
Ryan Grotjohn (So., Cave Creek, Ariz., Brophy College Prep) tripled in Kris Cayton (R-Sr., Manhattan Beach, Calif., LA Harbor College) in the top of the fourth to break the seal for the 'Runners. Christian Deaton (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS) plated Grotjohn with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
UCI took advantage of a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth to add two more runs for a four-run advantage. Andrew Martinez homered to open the fifth for UC Irvine. CSUB got two back in the sixth when pinch-hitter Max Carter (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) drove in a pair with a two-out single.
The Anteaters scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to go up six. Carter charted his third RBI of the day, again with two outs, when he singled in Joey Sanchez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif., El Rancho HS).
Jordie Hein (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) followed immediately with an RBI single that cut the UCI lead to 10-6. David Metzgar (So., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) walked to load the bases and bring up the potential tying run in Mylz Jones (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS).
For the second consecutive day, UCI closer Sam Moore retired Jones in a key situation as Jones grounded out to third. The Anteaters scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to conclude the scoring.
UCI outhit CSUB 15-11. Holland went 5-for-5 with two runs scored for the Anteaters. Mikey Duarte was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Martinez would end the day 2-for-2. Four Roadrunners, Metzgar, Sanchez, Deaton, and Carter, would post two hits.
"When you are playing well, you find a different way to win everyday and when you're playing poorly, you find a way to lose," said CSUB head coach Bill Kernen. "Obviously that's where we are and today we hit better and didn't get the job done on the mound. We are still struggling to find out who we are as a team."
