BOONE, N.C.—The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team took part in the App State Mountaineer Duals Saturday.

"We wrestled fairly well for our first competition," said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza.

The Roadrunners opened the day with a 26-11 victory over Gardner-Webb.  The dual began at 125 pounds where Sergio Mendez defeated Cortez Starkes 7-4 to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs' Tyler Ziegler earned a 2-1 decision against Carlos Herrera to tie the dual.

Ian Nickell put the 'Runners up for good with a tech fall (15-0) over Ryan Hull at 141. Coleman Hammond (149), AJ Fierro (157), Adam Fierro (165), and Bryce Hammond (174) won the next four matches for the Roadrunners. With CSU Bakersfield leading 21-3, Hunter Gamble's technical fall over Dylan Bollinger at 184 pounds. Reuben Franklin earned a tech fall (20-5) at 197 over Gray Jones before Boyce Cornwell defeated Matt Williams 6-4 in overtime at heavyweight.

The Roadrunners defeated Anderson 51-0 in the middle dual of the day.  CSUB received forfeit victories at 125, 141, and 197. Carlos Herrera (133), Coleman Hammond (149), Adam Fierro (165), and Bryan Battisto (174) won by tech fall. Williams won by pin at heavyweight. The 51 points are the most scored in a dual by the Roadrunners since Jan. 24, 2004 when CSUB defeated Portland State 54-0.

CSU Bakersfield dropped a 19-15 decision to App State in the final dual of the day. Mendez put the Roadrunners into the lead with an 8-6 victory against Vito Pasone. The Mountaineers tied the dual when Jacob Gregg defeated Carlos Herrera 3-2 in the 133-pound match.

App State took a 6-3 lead when Michael Longo handed Nickell a 6-2 defeat at 141. Coleman Hammond returned the lead to the Roadrunners when he posted a major decision (17-1) against Matt Zovistoski in the 149-pound bout. David Peters-Logue made it 9-8 in favor of the Apps with a 6-3 victory over AJ Fierro at 157.

Adam Fierro earned a 3-1 victory at 165 against Forrest Przybsz to give CSUB an 11-9 advantage.  Nick Kee upset Bryce Hammond 6-3 at 174 before Taylor Jackson defeated Bollinger 8-2 in the 184-pound match. Franklin tied the match when earned a major decision (18-5) against Tyler Radford at 197. With the dual tied at 15, Denzel Dejournette defeated Williams via major decision (14-1) to earn the Mountaineers the victory, 19-15.

"The guys looked sharp," Mendoza said. "We knew that our last dual against App State would be a dogfight. It came down to the last match and they won."

The Roadrunners have a busy week ahead. On Saturday, CSUB will take part in “Take it Outside II” at California Baptist. The outdoor meet is set for 12 p.m. in Riverside. CSU Bakersfield will then travel to Fresno's Selland Arena where CSUB hosts the fifth Roadrunner Open. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. CSUB hosts No. 1 Penn State Nov. 20 in the Icardo Center.
