HONOLULU, Hawaii—Poor CSU Bakersfield shooting proved to be the difference as the Roadrunners dropped a 60-47 decision to No. 16/18 Arizona State.

“We followed the game plan and played good defense,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “We just struggled to score.”

The Sun Devils (2-2) opened the game on an 8-0 run, holding the Roadrunners without a field goal for the first 5:24 of the game. Taking advantage of seven CSUB turnovers which were turned into eight points, Arizona State would lead 19-9 at the end of one.

The Roadrunners missed 12 of their 14 field goal attempts in the second quarter. CSUB would go over six minutes without a point as ASU extended their lead to 18, 36-18 at halftime.  The Roadrunners made 4-of-22 field goal attempts in the first half. The Sun Devils scored 20 of their 36 in the paint, shooting 45.2% (14-of-31) for the stanza.

CSUB played tough defense in the third quarter, forcing ASU to miss nine of their 12 shots in the frame.  The Sun Devils failed to score from the field in the final 3:22 of the third, as the Roadrunners trailed 45-28 upon the conclusion of the frame.

CSUB went with a field goal for the 3:46 of the fourth quarter before Airica Carmon connected on a three-pointer from the far right corner.  Carmon would score 11 of her career high 13 points in the fourth quarter as CSUB would outscore Arizona State 19-15 in the 10-minute span. 

For the game, CSUB would shoot 28.3% from the field (13-of-46) while ASU was 43.4% (23-of-53) from the floor). Arizona State outrebounded the Roadrunners 38-25, 10-4 on the offensive glass. CSUB forced 14 ASU turnovers and shot 81% from the free throw line (17-of-21).

Carmon was the only CSUB player in double figures. Quinn Dornstauder led the Sun Devils with 14 points. Katie Hempen scored 12 for ASU.

“We need to do a better job of executing on offense,” McCall said. “Sometimes, we get in a habit of taking quick shots and we are not that type of team anymore. If we run our plays though, we will be OK. But we have to learn to do that on a consistent basis.”

Batabe Zempare was selected to the All-Tournament team. South Carolina's A'ja Wilson was named MVP of the tournament. South Carolina's Bianca Cuevas, Quinn Dornstauder and Katie Hempen of Arizona State,and Megan Huff of Hawai'i rounded out the all-tourney team..
