CSUB Drops 3-0 Decision To UTRGV

Box Score

EDINBURG, Texas—UTRGV defeated CSU Bakersfield 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference men's soccer play Sunday afternoon.

Juanito Garcia scored the first goal of the match for UT Rio Grand Valley in the 39th minute of the first half.  Olli Tynkkynen converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Raul Fierro added a goal with 27 seconds remaining in the match to make it the final 3-0.

UTRGV outshot the Roadrunners 10-8. CSUB freshman goalie Oscar Gloveus got the start and made a season high seven saves.

“We got beat by a better team today,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “We gave all we had in the second half to get back in the game, but in the end, we got what we deserved.”

The Roadrunners conclude the regular season next Saturday at San José State. Kick is set for 2 p.m. Seattle U leads the WAC with 24 points, clinching the WAC regular season championship. SU is followed by Utah Valley with 19. CSUB remains in third place with 14 points.

UNLV, Houston Baptist and the Spartans are tied for fourth with 13 points. UIW, which is not eligible for the league tournament is seventh with 12 points. Air Force and Missouri-Kansas City follow with 10 points. Grand Canyon is 10th (9) with UTRGV (6) sitting in 11th.

CSUB can clinch a WAC Tournament berth with a win or a tie against the Spartans. If the Spartans defeat the Roadrunners, CSUB can still get into the tournament with a loss by UNLV, Houston Baptist, or Air Force.
