BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The finale of Western Athletic Conference women's soccer has arrived as all eight league teams will close out the regular season on Saturday. The Roadrunners are prepared to travel for a battle with Grand Canyon in their final match before hosting the WAC Tournament in Bakersfield.
The regular-season closer could bring three points to CSUB with a win, but the 'Runners are already locked into the No. 4/No. 5 opening-round matchup for the WAC Tournament. Curneen and his squad will face NM State Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. here at the Main Soccer Field. For more information on tickets for the WAC Tournament, visit the CSUB ticketing page.
Before the 'Runners can tackle the WAC Tournament, they will have to face off against Grand Canyon (7-9-2, 4-4-1 WAC). “After the first game with Grand Canyon this year, we are all expecting a tough battle” said Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the 'Runners. “Physically, they do a great job in setting the tone and sustaining it for the whole game. The challenge for us will be to outmatch their aggression and intensity levels.”
The 'Runners and Antelopes opened conference play with a match in Bakersfield, Sept. 11, which ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 exciting minutes of soccer. Deseree Doty gave GCU a 1-0 lead in the 78th minute, but Aminah Settles scored the equalizer a mere 19 seconds later.
The 'Lopes are led by Milla Benedetti who has scored seven goals this season. Cassie Beckwith is close behind her teammate with five goals while Kathryn Yancone leads all 'Lopes with five assists. GCU trusts Blakely Fraasch in goal and she has posted a goals against average of 1.73 with 84 saves on the season.
The match on Halloween night is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be featured live and for free on the WAC Digital network. Please visit the CSUB women's soccer schedule page for links to the video feed and live stats from Phoenix.
