Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield shut out Missouri-Kansas City 3-0 to complete a weekend sweep of Western Athletic Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The Roadrunners got on the board early as Christian Duarte scored 3:08 into the match. Duarte took a Simon Doherty pass and set the ball low and left of Kangaroo goalie Ryan Tome.
“Scoring the early goal was the key to the match,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “The goal set the tone for us for the rest of the game.”
CSUB struck again in the 13th minute when Jamie Carey-Morrell sent his indirect kick toward the UMKC goal where Mario Iniguez headed in the ball. Julian Zamora capped off the scoring with his team-leading seventh of the season in the 75th minute. Duarte earned the assist on the play.
Roadrunner goalies Nicolas Clever and Hector Valdez combined on CSUB's fourth shutout of the year. Clever made two saves in the first 82 minutes before giving way to Valdez who completed the match in between the pipes.
“It was important for us to keep a clean sheet and then we went about drafting a lot of chances,” Grant said. “Sunday games are difficult for all of the teams. A weekend like this has been coming for a team for a while now. We've been playing well and have a lot of confidence right now. We picked up six points on the weekend
The Roadrunners hit the road for the remaining three matches of the season, beginning Friday night at Houston Baptist. Kick is set for 7:30 p.m. (CDT). With the two victories this weekend, CSUB (6-4-4, 3-2-2 WAC) has 11 points in the league standings and depending on Sunday results, the Roadrunners could be as high as fourth as the weekend comes to close. UMKC falls to 4-8-2, 2-4-1 in WAC play.
“We've talked about peaking at the end of the season so we want our program to be at its best as we head towards the conference tournament and I think after this weekend we are set to arrive at our best (soccer).”
