BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The Roadrunner swimming and diving teams are set to close out the regular season and send off their seniors on Sunday with a dual against UC Santa Cruz. Gabriel Bertrand, Dennis Cassidy, Tony Daly, Mitchell Huxhold, and Justin Young will be swimming in their final home meet for the 'Runners on the men's side while the ladies will celebrate Delise Batiza and Lauren Kaufman.
“This weekend is always bitter sweet,” said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. “This is an amazing senior class. Huxhold, Cassidy, Bertrand, and Young have all been with me since their freshman years. Batiza and Kaufman were instrumental in the rebirth of the women's swimming program. Senior transfer Daly immediately fit into our family. I am proud of each one of them and sad to see them go; however, I am excited to see their futures.”
The seven seniors and the rest of the 'Runners will take on the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz in their last tune up before starting the final leg of the season leading into the WAC Championships. CSU Bakersfield will send its squads to San Antonio, Feb. 25-28, to take on the Western Athletic Conference. First, the 'Runners have some work to do according to Hansen: “This meet is important for last minute WAC relay spots for the men. The 200 free has Cassidy, Mihael Vukic, and Joseph Cobarrubias fighting for a spot on the 800 free relay as well as Lovre Soric and Jan Duerkop in the 100 back. The women are looking to gel together and compete as a team. UC Santa Cruz is a good team and we will swim fast for a win.”
The dual meet will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. As always, admission is free for fans and parking is also free during athletic events this year courtesy of the Athletic Department. Come to the Hillman Aquatics Center to send off the Roadrunner seniors!
