BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield volleyball team hosts the Roadrunner Classic this weekend in the Icardo Center.
The tournament begins on Friday at 12 when Long Beach State faces Fresno State. The Bulldogs take on Oregon State Friday at 5 before the Roadrunners host the 49ers at 7:30 p.m.
The tournament continues Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. when CSUB plays Oregon State at 11 a.m. Long Beach State plays Oregon State at 4 p.m. on Saturday before the tournament concludes at 6:30 p.m. when Bakersfield hosts Fresno State.
Long Beach State is 8-3. The Beach hits the road for the first time in the month of September after winning seven times in an eight-match homestand. Alex Reid is the team leader in kills with 100. Bre Mackie posted 92 kills, 45 blocks, and 23 assists this season. Bakersfield and Long Beach State are playing for the third time with the 49ers leading the all-time series 2-0.
The Beavers won their first seven matches of the season before losing 3-1 to Michigan State last Saturday in Corvallis. Mary-Kate Marshall paces Oregon State with 115 kills. Setter Tayla Woods has 248 assists. Oregon State defeated Bakersfield 3-0 on Sept. 4, 2011 in the only other previous meeting between the two schools.
Fresno State improved to 5-6 on the season after winning three of four matches at the St. John's Jack Kaiser Invitational last weekend in Jamaica, N.Y. Zana Bowens is the Bulldogs' leader in kills (144), digs (121), and service aces (21). Bakersfield and Fresno State are playing for the 21st time with the Bulldogs leading the all-time series 16-4. Fresno State has won seven in a row in the series dating back to Nov. 17, 2009 when CSUB defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in the Icardo Center.
