Box Score EDINBURG, Texas--A Texas-Pan American four-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Broncs (17-24, 7-8 WAC) defeated Bakersfield (15-22, 8-7 WAC) 5-1 Saturday.
With the Roadrunners leading 1-0, CSUB starter Austin Davis (R-So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) opened the bottom of the sixth by walking his first two batters of the game. Jesus Garcia reached on a 'Runner error. The opening UTPA batter of the inning, Lee Rios came around to score to tie the game.
Davis got the first out on a fielder's choice bringing up Alex Howe who charted an infield single to load the bases. Bryan Ramirez struck out for out number two. Shane Ammon drove in Garcia with another infield single for a 2-1 UTPA lead. Andy Fortuna's single to left drove in the remaining UTPA runs of the inning as Ammon was thrown out attempting to go from first to third on the play.
The Broncs scored one more in the eighth. Fortuna would end the day with two RBI's.
Andrew Lojewski (Jr., Woodland, Calif., American River College) had the lone CSUB RBI. Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) and Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaparral HS) both went 2-for-4 for Bakersfield. The Roadrunners stranded eighth runners on base, five of which were in scoring position.
Bakersfield travels to Kansas State to begin a two-game series on Monday in Manhattan. Both games will be televised on Fox College Sports beginning at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).
