BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield baseball team (14-20, 7-5 WAC) returns to Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Texas-Pan American (15-23, 5-7 WAC) Thursday.
The Roadrunners are tied for fifth in the league standings with Utah Valley. The Broncs are currently in eighth in the WAC standings. The top six eligble team advance to the May 21-25 WAC Tournament in Mesa, Ariz. at Cubs Park.
Thursday and Friday's games will begin at 7 p.m. CDT with the series finale coming on Saturday at 12 p.m. PDT. This is the first time Bakersfield and Texas-Pan American are playing baseball against each other.
UTPA sophomore second baseman Bryan Ramirez was named WAC Hitter of the Week on Monday. Ramirez hit .667 (6-for-9) with six walks and a hit by pitch for an .813 on-base percentage. He also stole two bases.
No. 3 Cal Poly (31-5) defeated Bakersfield (14-20) 9-1 Tuesday night at Hardt Field. Cal Poly batted around in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Mustangs' catcher Brett Barbier, in only ninth appearance of the season, smacked a two-RBI double to key the rally. The Mustangs scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, and twice in the sixth.
Nick Mathais led Cal Poly as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Brian Mundell drove in four runs. Zack Zehner was 3-for-5 with a run scored. In addition to his second inning double, Barbier was 2-for-5 with two run scored. Nick Torres went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) posted two of the Bakersfield hits. Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) drove in the lone CSUB run with a sac fly in the eighth that plated Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) who had tripled earlier in the inning.
