Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) scored the final four Bakersfield points as the Roadrunners (19-10) overcame an overtime deficit to defeat Utah Valley (7-23) 65-63 in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday night at the Orleans Arena.
CSUB was called for six fouls in the first 4:13 of the game as Utah Valley used its 6-5 center Sam Loggins to its advantage. Loggins scored 10 of the first 15 Wolverine points. Loggins would end the first half with 14 and 18 for the game.
UtahValley led 28-21 out of the final media timeout of the first half before CSUB responded with a 7-0 spurt to tie it up heading into halftime. Despite having the six fouls called so early on the 'Runners, Bakersfield did not have a foul called against the team over the final 15:13 of the first half.
With the scored tied at 40 and just under 12 to play in the second half, UVU scored their next five from the free throw line for a one-point lead. Outland made her first three of the night for a two-point lead. The Wolverines made 2-of-4 free throw attempts over the next two minute to make it 47-47. Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Southern Oregon) connected on a fast break basket with 7:31 to give CSUB a 49-47 lead. Loggins' was 1-of-2 from the charity stripe for a 49-48 CSUB advantage with 6:35 left.
Loggins made the first UVU FG in over six minutes to give UVU a 50-49 lead a little over a minute later. Georgia Agnew's basket the next time down for the Wolverines pushed the lead for UtahValley. An Erika Williams (R-Fr., Fresno, Calif., Diamond Ranch HS) basket would put CSUB up 53-52, but Loggins responded right back for a 54-53 UVU lead. Agnew could only make 1-of-2 FT with 2:20 to go which led to a Dajy Vines (R-Jr., Oxnard, Calif., Santa Clara HS) and a 55-55 tie with 1:50 remaining.
The Teams on their ensuing offensive chances. CSUB got the ball and 27 seconds to play in regulation but Outland was called for an offensive foul with 4.6 seconds to go. UVU missed a heave at the buzzer, sending the game to the extra session.
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight made the first UVU FG of the overtime and after a CSUB miss of a three from Vines, Whitney Jenkins gave the Wolverines a 59-55 advantage.
A second CSUB missed field goal led to a jump ball, the 'Runners held the possession arrow but couldn't take advantage and after a second jump ball, UVU took it over. The Roadrunners got a stop, and Williams sank both free throw after being fouled on the defensive rebound.
Loggins was fouled by Williams, sending her to the line for the eighth and ninth times of the night. She connected on 1-of-2 but the Wolverines grabbed the offensive rebound. UVU was called for a foul on their field goal miss, sending Williams back to the line for another 1-n-1 attempt. The 6-0 forward made both. With a 60-59 lead, UtahValley worked the ball to Agnew for a drive, but she missed the attempt and Williams got the rebound.
On the ensuing possession, CSUB missed two layups, but kept the ball when it went out of bounds off a UVU player. Bakersfield inbounded the ball with 44.6 seconds to play, working the ball to Outland who connected on a 17-foot jumper for a one-point lead.
UtahValley called timeout with 30 seconds to go. Spooner-Knight drove in but missed a layup. The 'Runners got the rebound out to Outland who went to the line for a 1-n-1 try. Outland made both free throw attempts with 20 ticks on the clock. UtahValley called timeout. UVU drove the ball to Loggins who missed a layup. Batabe Zempare (So., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) was fouled on the rebound. She missed both free throw attempts.
CSUB elected to foul up three, sending Spooner-Knight to the line where she missed the first attempt and made the second. The Wolverines called their final timeout down 63-61 with 7.6 to play. Outland was fouled on the inbounds pass. She made both for a four-point advantage. Spooner-Knight drove the lane for a bucket and a 65-63 advantage.
The Roadrunners called timeout with 0.7 to go to set up the final play of a game, a Williams baseball pass that drained the remaining time off the clock, sending the 'Runners into the semifinals.
Outland led Bakersfield with 17 points. Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Southern Oregon) had 15 while Vines posted 14. Williams scored a season best 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Loggins led all scorers with 28 points (on 11-of-16 shooting). Spooner-Knight had a double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds.
The Roadrunners, the No. 2 seed, will play the third seed, Seattle U (15-15) at 2:30 p.m. on Friday in the semis.
