Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) tied the Bakersfield Division I record for most points in a game as Bakersfield defeated Kansas City 97-91 in Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday night.
Outland scored a career high 36 points, marking the third time since the Roadrunners moved to Division I that a 'Runner player scored 36 in a game. Phynique Allen (36 at Texas A&M-CC, 3/17/10) was the last Bakersfield player to score 36. Outland was 14-of-27 from the field and 6-of-11 from the free throw line. The 5-9 wing tied the Division I school record for most made field goals in a game (with two others, most recently Katie Williams at Oregon State, 11/21/08). Outland led the 'Runners with eight rebounds.
Shooting proved to be the difference in the contest. The 'Roos made 16-of-26 baskets in the first half (60%) as UMKC took a 47-44 lead into the break. Bakersfield responded by making 19-of-32 attempts in the second half (59.4%) while holding Kansas City to 35% (14-of-40) in the closing frame.
Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Southern Oregon) went 10-of-13 from the field on her way to 24 points. Alyssa Shannon (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) made four free throws in the final two minutes of the game as she scored 13. Shannon has now made 15 free throw attempts in a row.
Eilise O'Connor, the WAC's leading scorer posted 31 points, going 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Kimm Nezianya charted a double-double of 23 points and 17 rebounds. Callie White had 18.
Despite Nezianya leading the 'Roos past CSUB in rebounding 47-36, the Roadrunners outscored Kansas City 64-34 in the paint and turned 19 UMKC (10-15, 6-6 WAC) turnovers into 25 points (compared to six for the Kangaroos).
"This time of the year, its all about wins," said Bakersfield head coach Greg McCall. "We want to get better defensively, but the second time around the conference, (its tougher to contain players such as O'Connor). Other teams might have players, but we have Ty (Outland), She creates opportunities for our other players such as Melissa (Sweat) and gives us a great 1-2 punch."
With Seattle U's loss to Grand Canyon Thursday night, Bakersfield (15-9, 9-3) holds a two game advantage in the loss column over the Redhawks. The Roadrunners trail league leader Idaho (18-8, 11-1) by two games in both the win and the loss columns. CSUB hosts Chicago State (3-22, 0-12 WAC) Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
