BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Aly Ahmed (So., Alexandria, Egypt, Midlands CC) and Brandon Barnes (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Lipscomb) scored 16 points apiece as the Bakersfield Roadrunners had four players in double-digits winning their first Western Athletic Conference home game Thursday night 76-67 over Idaho at the Icardo Center.
Ahmed posted his second double-double of the season while scoring a career-high 16 points and adding 10 rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting while Barnes was 7-of-12 for Bakersfield who shot 18-of-30 good for 60% in the second half.
“It was a great win for us, I thank God for the victory tonight and I thank our players and coaches for just hanging in there,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “I told them I believed it would start turning our way and I believe in this team and I'm just proud of the character of this team.”
Bakersfield jumped out to 10-point first-half lead before Idaho responded with a 16-5 run to take their first lead of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. The Roadrunners would fall behind by seven points in the half with 3:11 to play but finished the half on a 5-0 run to trail 30-28.
CSUB wouldn't trail long in the second half taking the lead with for good with 14:38 to go following eight-straight points from Ahmed who converted five of six shots in the second half. Bakersfield, who had struggled closing out conference games this season, got a pair of clutch three-pointers from Corey Hall (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Ventura CC) who finished the game with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 2-of-3 from three-point range in 21 minutes of action. The most Hall has played all season.
Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) added his own pair of three-pointers in the second half to extend Bakersfield's lead while scoring 10 points on 3-of-9 from beyond-the-arc including a four-point play with 5:35 to play to put the 'Runners up by 10 points. Tyrell Corbin (Jr., Columbia, S.C., Salt Lake City CC) added 8 points including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final minutes.
“We had guys like Tyrell and Corey that haven't played that much lately step up and they gave us quality minutes tonight,” said Barnes. “I was just pleased with our overall effort for 40 minutes we just kept battling away and I thought we made some plays we needed to make.”
Bakersfield was 29-of-60 form the field for 48% and 6-of-14 from three-point range in the win. Idaho was led by Stephen Madison's 18 points as Bakersfield snapped his three-game streak of scoring more than 20 points.
Thursday was the final game this season at the Icardo Center for the Roadrunners who will play their final three WAC games at Rabobank Arena including Saturday night's matchup with Seattle. The 'Runners improved to 184-2 all-time at the Icardo Center.
Seattle (12-11, 4-6 WAC) is coming off a 71-57 win over first-place Utah Valley Thursday night in Orem, Utah.
