Former 'Runner Zardes Helps Galaxy Win MLS Cup

Former CSU Bakersfield men's soccer player Gyasi Zardes helped the Los Angeles Galaxy win its fifth MLS Cup Dec. 7 when he scored the first goal in the Galaxy's 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution.

Zardes scored the match's first goal in the 52nd minute. New England tied the score in the 79th minute before Robbie Keane scored the game winner in the 111th minute.

Zardes was second on the Galaxy this past season in goals with 16. He started 26 of 32 appearances and added two assists for a total of 34 points. Zardes played for the Roadrunners from 2010-12, becoming the program's all-time goal scorer at the Division I level (38). He is second in school history in points scores (94) and he hold the school record for most goals in a match (4 vs. Seattle U, 10/14/12).

Zardes is the only player in CSUB history to become a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy (2011), the Heisman Trophy of Men's College Soccer.  Zardes was selected as an All-American for the Roadrunners four times by three different organizations during his CSUB career. He was a two-time MPSF MVP and the MPSF Freshman of the Year.
