BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The Roadrunner women's soccer team has earned a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since joining the conference at the start of the 2013-14 season. Bakersfield has traveled to Seattle and is preparing for their first postseason match which will be played against New Mexico State on Nov. 6 at Championship Field.
After a Bakersfield win at the end of October, the 'Runners and Aggies are tied 2-2 in the all-time series. New Mexico State won the first ever meeting in 2012 while the programs split a pair of double overtime matches a year ago.
In their last meeting, Bakersfield beat the Aggies 4-2 at home Oct. 26. Sophomore Hedda Regefalk (Stockholm, Sweden, Blackesberg Gymnasium) put away two goals in the win on her way to a five-goal weekend and earning WAC Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman Jess Moorehead (Strabane, N. Ireland, Strabane Academy) picked up her first goal of the year against NMSU and added two assists as well. Defender Taylor Wheeler (Jr., Fullerton, Calif., La Habra HS) picked up her second goal of the season and fed Regefalk for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
The Aggies closed the regular season with a 4-1 win over Texas-Pan American. NMSU sits one spot behind Bakersfield in the WAC standings with an overall record of 4-14-0 and a conference record of 3-7. New Mexico State lost the fourth seed in the tournament to Bakersfield due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. Jennae Cambra is second in the WAC in both points per game (1.60) and goals per game (0.65). NMSU has two goalies that split time while Taylor Rice leads the pair in goals against average (3.02).
