Box Score AFA, Colo.—Air Force scored two goals 1:22 apart early in the second half as the Falcons defeated Bakersfield 4-2 in Western Athletic Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The match was delayed 35 minutes by weather that rolled through Pikes Peak region of Colorado. Weather would be a factor throughout the match. Three minutes in, the Falcons' Cameron Duley used the wind to take a shot towards the top right of Nicolas Clever (So., Cologne, Germany, Gesamtschule Kuerten) in net for the 'Runners. Clever punched the ball away. Scott McGillvary followed up with an attempt of his own but the shot went wide.
Rain and light snow showers began around the seven-minute mark of the first half. The Roadrunners went on the offense in the 14th minute. Long passes from Jamie Carey-Morrell (Fr., Stevenage, England, The Nobel School) and David Velasquez (R-Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Locke HS) set up Simon Doherty (Jr., West Lothian, Scotland, FDU) on the right side of the field. Doherty passed the ball towards the left side of the Air Force goal. Lucas Dall'Orso (Sr., Orange County, Calif., JSerra Catholic HS) took the pass and scored his second career goal of the year to get the 'Runners into the lead at 1-0.
Air Force (6-2-3, 2-1 WAC) would press the play throughout the first half. The Falcons' pressure paid off when Zach Hill tied the match at one when he completed a give and go from Alex Frazier at the 42:58 mark. Air Force outshot the 'Runners 10-2 in the first half as Clever made five saves.
The Falcons had the wind at their back as the rain/snow showers stopped going into the second half. Air Force took the lead at 2-1 in the 52nd minute when Frazier picked up his second assist as he set up Gus Jensen for a one-time from 10 yards out. Ben Kern's 30-yarder from the top left 1:22 later gave the Falcons the two-goal advantage.
The Roadrunners tried to work their way back with two shots and two corner kicks between the 61st and 62nd minutes, but Air Force turned away the 'Runner offense.
McGillvary added to the Falcons' lead with a goal that went in off the CSUB cross bar from 20 yards out. Dall'Orso nearly earned his second goal but his shot went off the post in the 74th minute.
