Hernandez Wins Twice; 'Runners Fall At UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Freshman Paola Hernandez (Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) won two individual events, but Bakersfield fell to Air Force and UNLV as part of a women's swimming and diving tri-dual Saturday at UNLV. Bakersfield lost 179-120 to UNLV and 190-109 to UNLV.

Hernandez recorded a season best 1:52.71 in the 200 freestyle to take home top honors in the event. She won also registered a season best in the 100 free, winning the race in a time of :51.72. Hernandez was also fourth in the 50 free (:24.32). It was the first time this season Hernandez raced in the event. Hernandez anchored the 400 free relay which came in second (3:32.07).

Her anchor leg was faster (:51.50) than her individual performance earlier in the meet. Joining Hernandez on the relay were Kelsey Lange (So., San Jose, Calif., Santa Teresa HS), Lauren Kaufman (Jr., Renton, Wash., TCU), and Christy Vo (So., Portland, Ore., Reynolds HS).

Michaela Paige (So., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.53, a season best, which was only .48 away from her own school record in the race. Paige earned a season best time in the 100 butterfly, finishing second by earning a time of :56.48.

Carlee Burks (Fr., Bakersfield, Centennial HS) placed second in the 1m diving event with a score of 228.10.

"We had a rough day," said Bakersfield director of swimming and diving Chris Hansen. "Michaela Paige could only swim two events due to her recurring elbow injury and Delise Batiza is battling some breathing issues.  Paola Hernandez, Nicolette Goncalves and Jeanette Dove took control of their events to have some great swims.  We are psyched to have finished the women's dual meet season with an 8-5 record.   We are on the right road to swim a very fast WAC Championship."

The Roadrunner regular season is complete. CSUB won a school record eight duals during the regular season (8-5). The next time Bakersfield returns to the pool will be at the Feb. 26-Mar. 1 WAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
