BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Director of Athletics Jeff Konya has received and accepted the resignation of Melissa Phillips as head women's soccer coach at CSUB after three seasons with the Roadrunners.
Phillips, who previously served as an assistant coach with Bakersfield in 2009 and 2010 was hired in 2011 at the age of 23, then the youngest coach in NCAA Division I soccer. She had a career record of 13-39-4 a win total that included a six-win season in 2012, the most for the Roadrunners' program at the Division I level.
“We are appreciative of Coach Phillips' efforts for Bakersfield women's soccer and we know she put everything into making this program better,” Konya said. “We wish her the best in what we anticipate will be a bright coaching future.”
This past season she coached Hedda Regelfalk, who was named Western Athletic Conference 'Freshman of the Year' along with first-team All-Conference selection Erica Shelton. Shelton was also named third-team All-Region.
In the classroom, Phillips' teams earned the athletic departments highest GPA as well as NSCAA All-Academic team honors in each of her seasons at the helm. Five student-athletes this season were also named Academic All-WAC, which requires a 3.2 GPA and participation in at least 50% of the team's matches.
“I would like to thank the University and the Athletics Department for the opportunity to lead the women's soccer program for the last three years,” Phillips said. “I wish the program the best of luck moving forward.”
A national search for Phillips' successor will begin immediately.
