BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--A Hugo Vinales (Fr., Palm Springs, Calif., Palm Springs HS) goal with 1:18 remaining gave Bakersfield a 5-4 victory over The Master's College in a men's soccer exhibition Thursday night.
With the Roadrunners leading 3-1, the teams combined for five goals over the final 12 minutes. Kevin Scheunemann scored twice in a 5:03 span around a Will Davis (R-Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Quartz HIll HS) tally to make it 4-3. Jordan Edwards tied the score in the 84th minute off a Scheunemann pass.
The 'Runners pressed the action with freshman Brian Charles (Temecula, Calif., Temecula HS) launching a run with the ball. Charles passed the ball to Vinales who converted from three yards out for the gamewinner.
Bakersfield used its entire starting lineup in the first half to take the three-goal advantage into halftime. Christian Duarte (So., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs HS), Eduardo Caldaza (So., Los Angeles, Calif., Roosevelt HS), and Giovanni Godoy (Fr., Watsonville, Calif., Watsonville HS) scored for the Roadrunners in the opening frame.
"We probably played our starting team for Sunday in the first half and they're quite comfortable (with each other) and played very well," said Bakersfield head coach Simon Tobin. "We played some new players and the second team played the second half and we let the other team get back into the game. Again, the exhibition game is a training game and it was beneficial for us.Our legs were there a little bit but not quite where we should be but everything is meant to peak on Sunday. We were out here training this morning so they're not perfectly fresh you know but we'll have a single session tomorrow and travel Saturday, play Sunday. They'll be fresh for Sunday."
Bakersfield opens the regular season Sunday night when the Roadrunners travel to Denver for a 7:30 p.m. (MDT) start.
