BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Playing a match one day after reporting to 2013 training camp, Bakersfield fell 3-1 to Trinity Western in men's soccer exhibition action Saturday night at the Main Soccer Field.
"This was our fourth practice in, so our legs are a little bit heavy, so we just got going," said Bakersfield head coach Simon Tobin. "It might be a little early for a game but its better than running against ourselves."
The Roadrunners recorded two practices Friday and held a Saturday morning session before heading to the pitch against the visting Spartans who are on a three-match tour of California. Jarvis Ambaka scored all three goals for Trinity Western, breaking the seal in the 19th minute. Christian Duarte (So., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs HS) tied the score in the 37th minute when he put back a Dante Niño (So., Reseda, Calif., Birmingham HS) rebound.
Ambaka scored what proved to be the gamewinner in the 41st minute and added an insurance goal seven minutes in to the second half. Three different Spartans had assists.
"We're just looking at three or four different things and adjusting things around," Tobin said. "We saw a couple things that we'll address but its quite deceptive. In the second half we played quite well. We have 10-11 days now so the next exhibition game will really matter because that's where we will have most of our pieces in place."
Bakersfield concludes the exhibition slate Aug. 29 when the Roadrunners host The Master's College in a 7 p.m. tilt.
