BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Casey Bloomquist led a trio of Cal Poly pitchers that allowed three CSU Bakersfield hits as the No. 20 Mustangs (22-8) defeated the Roadrunners (21-12) 5-2 Tuesday night.
Bloomquist, a freshman from Bakersfield, allowed one hit over the first 6.1 innings before being relieved by Michael Holback. Bloomquist, who was making only his second start of the year, struck out five and walked three. He was charged with both CSUB runs.
Holback gave up one hit over the next 1.2 inning before giving way to Cal Poly closer Reid Reilly. Reilly came on with the tying run at the plate in the eighth in Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) and struck out the Bakersfield catcher to end the inning. CSUB again put the tying run on with two outs in the ninth and for the second time Reilly pitched out of the jam, getting Randy Medellin (Fr., Lake Balboa, Calif., Birmingham HS) to strike out to end the game.
Reilly earned his eighth save of the year, giving up one hit in the ninth. The Cal Poly pitchers recorded 11 strikeouts. Peter Van Gansen and Nick Torres both recorded three hits and two RBI's for Cal Poly.
The Roadrunners host Cal State Northridge Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
