OREM, Utah - The CSU Bakersfield softball team fell to Utah Valley 10-1 and 7-1 in their Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader on Friday at Wolverine Field. The two teams will complete their PCSC series with another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon (MDT).
Redshirt senior center fielder Laura King (Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) finished the day with two hits, and scored one run to lead the offense for CSUB (6-21, 2-4 PCSC). Freshman pinch hitter/designated player Makenzie Zinger (Visalia, Calif., Redwood HS) added an RBI and scored a run.
Utah Valley (19-11, 4-2 PCSC) outhit the 'Runners 23-4 on the day. Utah Valley senior pitcher Tiffany Mills, who started both games for the Wolverines, gave up on earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 10 innings between the two games.
The Wolverine's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 and increased it to 7-0 after three innings and 10-0 after four. The 'Runners got on the board in the fifth inning when Zinger and junior pinch hitter Kara Frankhouser (Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) were both hit by pitches to start the inning. Junior Taylor DeSilva (Sunnyvale, Calif., Univ. of the Pacific) then came in to pitch hit a single to load the bases. Sophomore second baseman Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Zinger. The 'Runners couldn't manage any more runs and the game ended in the fifth.
In Game 2, the Wolverines scored five runs in the first inning to take another early lead. CSUB got a run back in the top of the fourth when King led off with a single. Junior shortstop Shay Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) then advanced King to second on a grounder. King then stole third before sophomore third baseman Madison Bundy (Anacortes, Wash., Oregon State) hit a single down the left field line to bring King home. Utah Valley scored two more runs in the fifth to seal the 7-1 victory.
