BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield swept a pair of matches on day one of the Roadrunner Invitational II Friday.
Bakersfield defeated Fresno Pacific to open the tournament Friday morning. Nine different CSUB players scored led by Nicola Barrett (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) who charted four goals. Niki De Leon (Fr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS), Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS), and Paige Tsuruda (Jr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy) all tallied two goals.
The Roadrunners shutout the Sunbirds in the second half, outscoring FPU 6-0 in the closing stanza. Chiyeko Morisaki (Jr., Lodi, Calif., Tokay HS) made a career high 10 saves over the final three quarters.
Bakersfield defeated Brown 10-8 in the nightcap. The Roadrunners overcame a sluggish start to shutout the Bears in the second quarter and take a 5-2 lead into the break. Brown climbed to within one, 8-7, with just under seven minutes to play in the match. CSUB responded with goals from Shelby and Jessica Browning (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) to stretch the advantage to three and go onto win by two.
Shelby turned in a hat trick while De Leon, Browning, and Sam Shead (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) each scored twice. Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made six saves.
"We dipped into our bench more than we usually do and it was nice to see everyone really step up," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We were successful because everyone is beginning to understand their roles and were really working well together."
The tournament concludes Saturday when CSUB hosts No. 1 USC at 12 p.m. The Women of Troy face Brown at 1:30 p.m. at the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
