SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield water polo team earned a pair of victories in at the UCSB Mini Tournament Sunday.

In the opener, CSUB rallied from a 5-2 first quarter deficit to defeat Iona College 14-10. Sam Shead (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) scored a season high five goals to pace the 'Runners. Niki De Leon (Fr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) posted a season best four goals. Nicola Barrett (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) posted two goals. 

"We started slow, but really focused on our counter attack and we got some quick goals in transition," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "Sam and Niki did a great job reading the goalie and we had some great defnsive stops by Sierra Peltcher. (Goalie) Alex Bayer had some nice passes on the transition which also helped our offense."

Sunday concluded with a 10-5 victory for CSUB over Marist. With the match tied at three after one, the Roadrunners shutout the Red Foxes over the next two periods, outscoring Marist 5-0.

Barrett scored four more times for the 'Runners. Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) posted two goals as did Paige Tsuruda (Jr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy). Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made eight saves.

"To have back to back scoreless quarters shows that we are understanding what we need to do on defense," Gall said. "Bayer played well and we need that from her in each quarter. We will try and use this momentum as focus on UCLA next Sunday."

CSUB resumes MPSF action against the No. 2 Bruins at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles.
