LA JOLLA, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield water polo team split a pair of matches on the first day of the UCSD Triton Classic Saturday.
No. 13 UC Santa Barbara defeated CSU Bakersfield 11-3 in the first session. Sam Shead (Sr.
Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS), Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS), and Niki De Leon (Fr., Montebello, Calif. (Montebello HS) posted the goals for CSUB. Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made three saves.
"We made too many turnovers on offense and we were unable to to capitalize on our 6-on-5 opportunities," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall.
Shannon McKenzie (R-Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) scored with 2:18 remaining in the fourth quarter to give CSUB a 12-11 victory over Sonoma State in the final match of pool play. The match was tied after each of the first three quarters. The teams were tied two addition times before McKenzie posted the gamewinner. The Roadrunner defense forced turnovers on the final two Sonoma State possessions to secure the victory.
Taylor Hanson (Jr., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) and Nicola Barrett (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) both recorded hat tricks. McKenzie and Shead scored twice. Shead and Hanson made three steals while McKenzie drew three ejections. Bayer made eight saves.
"It was nice to get our offense going and to get in the win column," Gall said.
The Roadrunners take on No. 15 Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. Sunday to begin the final day of the tournament.
