DAVIS, Calif.--The No. 20 CSU Bakersfield water polo team split at the Davis Challenge Saturday.
The Roadrunners defeated Cal Lutheran 16-10 in the opener. Freshman Nicola Barrett (Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) posted five goals against the Regals. Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored three times with eight other CSUB players scoring at least once. Chiyeko Morisaki (Jr., Lodi, Calif., Tokay HS) made six saves.
The Roadrunners dropped a 12-7 decision to No. 14 UC Davis in the nightcap. Barrett had a hat trick. Shannon McKenzie (R-Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) scored twice. Sam Shead (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) drew six ejections and scored a goal.
"We are seeing some good things on offense, but we still need to improve defensively," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. We are not scoring on the opportunities that we are creating. We are doing many good things, but if we can't put the ball in the goal, we will continue to get these results. Hopefully we can get people healthy and be ready for next week."
The Roadrunners are the 16th seed at next week's UC Invitational. CSUB will open the tourney against the No. 1 seed, and the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Stanford on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
