Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo.--The Bakersfield volleyball team battled back from 2-0 down against Kansas City, but the 'Runner rally fell short as the 'Roos defeated Bakersfield 3-2.
Kansas City (13-10, 7-4 WAC) won each of the first two sets by a 25-20 count. The Roadrunners (15-10, 7-4 WAC) took set three by a score of 25-23 before earning a 25-20 set four win.
The 'Roos opened the fifth set on a 5-1 run before CSUB cut it to 8-5. At 11-6, the 'Runners called timeout. The teams exchanged points. The Roadrunners closed to within 13-9, before UMKC scored the final two points for the match victory.
Debora Araujo (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska CC) recorded her 10th double-double of the year as she had 26 kills and 16 digs. Molly O'Hagan (Jr., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) tallied 15 kills. Kelsee Sawyer (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) earned her fourth double-double of the year with 10 kills and 10 digs. Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska CC) posted 62 assists while libero Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) registered 29 digs.
Three Kangaroos; Kaylyn Brandt (31a-18d), Jessica Hendin (22k-12d) and Sydney Crimmins (13k-20d) all had double-doubles for the Kangaroos. Kansas City broke Bakersfield's six-game winning streak. The teams are now tied for third in the league.
"I commend UMKC, they came out ready to compete tonight," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We competed much better in the third and fourth sets, but unfortunately, we didn't finish the way we wanted. We will need a consistent competitive fight from all of our players on Saturday."
The Roadrunners travel to Chicago State Saturday for a 1 p.m. (CDT) start.
