BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Giovanni Godoy's (Fr., Watsonville, Calif., Watsonville HS) goal with 3:54 remaining in the second half gave Bakersfield head coach Simon Tobin his 300th career victory as the Roadrunners defeated San José State 1-0 Friday night.

Bakersfield controlled the first half, outshooting the Spartans 11-4, but it was San José State who held the pace in the closing frame, holding the 'Runners to two shots up to Godoy's strike. Jonathan Colunga (Fr., Lindsay, Calif., Lindsay HS), a late Bakersfield sub, sent a long ball to Godoy, who beat Spartans' keeper Emmanuel Espinosa from 10 yards.

"San José State is always a tough team for us," Tobin said. "They play a little bit of a different style than us and they are quite good at it. It was good for us to face them. I thought we had the better game and deserved to win.Giovanni Godoy is a freshman who has a big future ahead of him. We have put three good performances in a row together and I think we will finish the season quite strong."

Tobin becomes the 16th active Division I men's soccer coach with at least 300 victories in a career and is only the 91st in the history of NCAA men's soccer (at all levels) to win at least 300 in a career. Tobin is 300-186-54 at the helm of the Roadrunners.

Tobin was modest upon the conclusion of the game when asked about his 300th victory.

"I didn't know I had 300 wins," Tobin said. "If you coach anywhere long enough, you are going to get a lot of wins. I have been here 27 years, but it's nice."

Bakersfield hosts division leader Seattle U Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
