Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--A balanced offensive attack combined with a near triple-double by setter Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) led Bakersfield past Utah Valley 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action Thursday night.
The Roadrunners, who entered the night as only one of five teams in Division I with three players averaging at least 3.00 kills per set, saw three players reach double figures in kills. Kelsee Sawyer (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) paced Bakersfield with 11 kills. Debora Araujo (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) and Shayna Guitare (Sr., Torrance, Calif., Pierce College) each recorded 10 kills.
Gonçalves directed the offense to a .311 hitting percentage on the night (43k-10e-106a) while dishing out 36 assists. She earned her ninth double-double of the year with 14 digs. The triple-double was nearly accomplished as the 5-7 business major added a career high six blocks. Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) added 18 digs.
"We came out with a good game plan against them and our players executed it very well," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson. "I think we held good offensive pressure, good serving pressure and we never let up on them and they couldn't get any momentum."
The Roadrunners step out of WAC play Sunday afternoon when Bakersfield hosts San José State at 4 p.m.
