SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield water polo team went 1-1 on day one of the UCSB Invitational.
The Roadrunners dropped an 11-8 decision to No. 6 UC Irvine in the morning. Taylor Hanson (Jr., Modesto, Calif, Johansen HS) and Shannon McKenzie (R-Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) both scored two goals for CSUB. Jessica Browning (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS). drew six ejections and one five-meter penalty shot. Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made seven saves.
"We are making improvements on both ends of the pool," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We need to convert our opportunities. We are doing a good job of competing with the top 10 teams. Its only a matter of time before we get a win."
The Roadrunners defeated Concordia-Irvine 11-10 in Saturday's nightcap. Eight different CSUB players scored the 11 goals with Paige Tsuruda (Jr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy), Nicola Barrett (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS), and Niki De Leon (Fr., Montebello, Calif. (Montebello HS) each scoring twice. Bayer made 10 saves.
"We were slow to start offensively," Gall said. "We had a strong second half with eight different players scoring. It's good to get the first win of the season. We have two big games tomorrow to be ready for."
CSUB plays MPSF foe, and the number one-ranked team in the country, Stanford, in a non-league match to begin Sunday's play at 9:10 a.m. The tournament concludes at 12:40 when the Roadrunners play Pacific.
