FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The
CSU Bakersfield women's track and team proved it is on the right track by
posting faster times and higher marks than in last season's first meet at
Saturday's season-opening competition at the Northern Arizona Invitational at
the Walkup Skydome.
Roadrunners Sara Nielson (La Quinta, Calif., Riverside CC) and Alyssa Page
(Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) both posted sixth-place finishes as the top
finishers for CSUB. Nielson, in her first meet since suffering a back injury
that sidelined her for a large portion of the 2012 season, placed sixth in the
60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.47 seconds. Page took sixth in the 400-meter
run with a time of 58.89 seconds.
"Many of our times and marks
are way ahead of where the team was in its first meet last year," said CSUB
head coach Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, who made her meet debut with the 'Runners
on Saturday. "This was an incredibly positive experience. The women competed
fantastic. I couldn't be more proud of them."
Anaiz Ortiz (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope
Valley College) and Kaylee Moyer (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS), finished
seventh and eighth respectively in the one-mile run with times of 5:54.33 and 5:59.84.
Freshman Jamara Scott (Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS)
placed ninth in the long jump after leaping 16 feet, 8 inches to round
out the Roadrunners who recorded finishes in the top 10.
Team scores were not kept for the meet.
The 'Runners will compete in their second and final indoor
meet on Feb. 17 in the Run For the Dream Invitational in Fresno, Calif. The
CSUB women will then be joined by the men for the outdoor season, which begins
March 8-9 at the Ben Brown Invitional in Fullerton, Calif.
